Geared slewing rings: precision under load

Geared slewing rings: precision under load

Geared slewing-ring are commonly used for slewing-ring platforms , radar antennas , or electro-optical platforms . The combination of a wire race bearing and integrated internal or external gearing enables the transmission of high torques while maintaining low friction torque. Shock and vibration resistance is addressed in the design of the slewing-ring connection by analytically considering the gearing and the bearing element. For azimuth and elevation movements in safety-critical systems, the following characteristics are decisive:

  • high stiffness in a compact form factor
  • reproducible positioning accuracy
  • adequate drive performance through adjustable rotational resistance
  • ample center clearance to accommodate cables, fluid lines, or sensors

Application-specific design and a range of variants

The design of a slewing-ring connection is always application-specific. In many projects, collaboration often begins in an early phase of the concept development. The experience from numerous already realized projects and the associated close early coordination with Franke GmbH significantly contribute to optimizing function, service life and overall system performance. Geared slewing-ring connections can be produced starting from a quantity of 1 and in diameters from 100 to 2000 mm. Depending on the application-specific requirements, suitable bearing types are employed, such as ball bearings, cross-roller bearings, angular contact ball bearings, and spherical roller bearings. Solutions developed for the specific use case are feasible for operating temperatures from -50°C to +90°C and beyond.

Application scenarios in safety technology

Sensor platforms and optoelectronics benefit from compact, lightweight slewing-ring connections with high stiffness and smooth torque delivery. Jerk-free movements and precise positioning are essential for target acquisition, reconnaissance, and surveillance.

Radar systems impose high requirements on diameter, stiffness and continuous operation. Slewing-ring connections with diameters up to 1800 mm must maintain exact alignment even under wind loads, vibrations and temperature cycling. Specific sealing and lubrication concepts ensure long-term functionality.

Weapon stations and slewing-ring mounts require high shock resistance, vibration resistance and secure accommodation of tipping moments and torsions. Geared slewing-ring connections based on wire race bearing technology combine robust power transmission with precise motion characteristics.

Across all listed systems, the quality of bearing technology directly affects the functional safety of the overall system.

Project-specific direct drives

Project-specific direct drives

Slewing rings with integrated direct drives are characterised by maximum energy efficiency. Integrating the drive motor into the bearing makes it possible to dispense with components such as gearboxes and drive pinions, and thus with complex lubrication circuits. The moving masses are therefore significantly reduced, and power loss due to factors such as friction and backlash is minimised. The direct drives, which are tailor-made for each specific application, meet the highest requirements for torque capacity, vibration resistance and resistance to environmental influences. They ensure reliable performance even during continuous operation under extreme conditions.

Company profile

For over 75 years, Franke has consistently convinced its customers with innovative, highly individualized storage solutions. They are all based on the same principle that Erich Franke invented in 1936. Erich Franke invented a new type of bearing in 1936 while searching for a particularly space-saving design: the Wire Race Bearing. Over the years we have consistently enhanced his principle of four race rings. Today our product program includes rotative and linear components – with and without drive. We employ a workforce of over 340 at our headquarters in Aalen. We are also represented at many locations throughout the world.

Slewing rings based on wire race bearing technology are more than just an alternative to conventional roller bearings. They form a design platform that combines material flexibility, integration capabilities and the optimisation of weight and performance. In defence technology applications where precision, robustness and reliability are required under extreme conditions, they form the basis for innovative, compact and durable rotary joints. For security technology, this means: maximum design freedom combined with optimum performance – a crucial prerequisite when technology meets defence.
